Question: Our group has a 182S model with 350 hours on the tach. Previously I corresponded about the M20 oil separator to reduce belly oil accumulation. I think I have found a solution but I'm unsure of its practicality:
When the oil quantity is left at six quarts on the dipstick, there doesn't seem to be any further depletion. HOWEVER, I'm not sure that six quarts is adequate for lubrication of the engine. And the oil looks pretty dirty. Would using Lycoming's LW16702 be a good idea? Or how about using 15W50 (which supposedly already contains LW16702)?
Expert Answer: I checked with Cessna for the most current revision of the Pilot's Operating Handbook (POH) for the 182S and it called out the following:
The engine has a total capacity of 9 quarts, with the oil filter accounting for approximately one quart of that total. The engine oil sump has a capacity of 8 quarts. The engine must not be operated on less than 4 quarts (as measured by the dipstick). For extended flights, the engine should be filled to capacity. This new revision reads quite different than the Information Manual, however the new revision is in line with the Textron Lycoming Operator's Manual, Section 3 for O-540 and IO-540 series engines.
Aeroshell 100 Plus is a new single grade ashless dispersant (AD) oil that has the same antiwear/anticorrosion additives (LW 16702) of Aeroshell Oil W15W-50. Aeroshell Oil W100+ is approved for use in Textron Lycoming engines.
Question: I had a JPINSTRUMENTS EDM 900 installed about 60 flight hours ago. I also replaced both sending units (long range tanks) at that time. Everything had been working fine until my most recent flight.
After about an hour or so of flying after having both tanks filled and burning off the left tank I noticed it was still registering as full. I’ve checked the resistance on the EDM 900 and it registers where it ought to with the fuel level shown.
My question is-are the bladder tanks prone to wrinkles to where a float could possibly hang up? I’ve shaken the plane to no avail. Bad sending unit? Or other? Your guidance is greatly appreciated! I’m headed out of the county soon and would like both fuel levels working. Thank you.
Expert Answer: I've not seen float sending units getting stuck on bladder tanks in the full position. What is common is for fuel to drain unevenly when the selector is set to both. It even happens when selected to a specific tank. Before diving too deep into troubleshooting, take a look at the CPA tech note #003. It details the process by which fuel will drain unevenly.
My first suspicion is that this has been happening in the past but wasn't noticed until accurate fuel quantity display was installed.
